I was invited to design the holiday promotional pieces for Quad Express Printing: a calendar, notebooks and a holiday card. For the calendar, my first concern was typography—I wanted big, beautiful numerals that would stand out from other calendars. I chose to knock out the numbers, so users may still write on a particular day. The calendar was a slam dunk—clients loved it and requested more. Interestingly, the numbers were so pretty, many people chose not to write on them! This was good to know, and for 2012, I wouldn’t need to use the knockout numbers.
At the time, Peter Samuels, a dear friend of mine, was exhibiting an amazing show of his dahlia photography. I approached him about using his work, and so the calendar became a cross-promotion between Quad, Peter and myself. His photography appears on all four panels: on top, and as a pattern behind the calendar months.
